New version and free upgrade enables annotation capabilities in Apple’s super-modern operating system

Calgary, AB --- September 10, 2002 --- SMART Technologies Inc., the interactive whiteboard industry pioneer and market leader, announces the immediate availability of SMART Board software for Mac OS X, a significant upgrade for Mac customers. This release, which works with the family of SMART Board interactive whiteboards and SMART Sympodium interactive lecterns, features the ability to annotate over moving or still video in QuickTime® Player. This latest version is now shipping with all SMART Board and Sympodium products. Customers with earlier versions can download a free upgrade of SMART Board software, which includes SMART Board driver 6.0 and SMART Notebook 1.3 software at www.smarttech.com/support/software.

From coaching and education to weather broadcasting and multimedia publishing, SMART Board software for Mac OS X works with QuickTime Player to provide a simple, inexpensive way to write over game footage, educational films, satellite images, digital video and storyboards.

The easy-to-use interface for SMART Board software for Mac OS X is also consistent with earlier Macintosh-based versions, eliminating the need for additional training. Mac users can continue to work naturally at the interactive whiteboard to take notes, highlight important information and now, write over top of any video supported by QuickTime Player.

“SMART is pleased to offer its Mac customers this feature-rich software that is so easy to use,” says Nancy Knowlton, president and COO of SMART Technologies Inc. “With the new interactive features of SMART Board software, including video annotation in QuickTime, Mac OS X users can create dynamic, collaborative environments.”

“Mac OS X is a powerful and engaging environment for interactive learning,” said Ron Okamoto, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “We're delighted to see SMART Technologies leverage the exceptional capabilities of Mac OS X and QuickTime to provide the Mac community with an easy-to-use tool for education.”

SMART Board Software Features
With SMART Board software, users can write over top of any computer application or Web page, edit notes and save screen captures to a single file. SMART Notebook whiteboarding software captures and saves object-oriented notes and provides unlimited whiteboarding space.

Mac OS X users can annotate over any moving or still video viewed with QuickTime Player on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard without purchasing additional software or hardware. Users can also play or freeze frames in either the player’s window or in full-screen mode. The Screen Capture tool in Notebook software allows users to capture the entire area or a portion of the screen, so that video annotations can be saved in Notebook software. Notes can then be easily printed or e-mailed for future reference and distribution.

SMART Board software is compatible with the Mac, Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems. This upgrade for Mac users coincides with the recent Windows upgrade featuring SMART Video Player, which allows Windows users to annotate over video.

Pricing and Availability
New SMART Board software for Mac OS X, including SMART Board driver 6.0 and SMART Notebook 1.3 software, currently ships with all SMART Board and SMART Sympodium products. Customers with earlier versions can download the free upgrade at www.smarttech.com/support/software.

SMART Board software is also available for Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Windows NT 4.0 (SP-4).
